Celebrate Saltillo Day in Austin at La Fete de Cinco De Mayo.
Visit the Austin Saltillo Sister Cities Association booth, hear the City of Austin’s official Proclamation of Saltillo Day in Austin and meet our special guests from Saltillo, Mexico.
La Fête de Cinco de Mayo is a vibrant celebration of Mexican and French cultures! Experience the rich intersection of traditions through engaging activities, educational games, lively performances, and a variety of food and art vendors. It’s a day of culture, connection, and creativity you won’t want to miss!
The French influence on Mexico culture is evident in architecture, cuisine, fashion and more especially during the 19th century when Emperor Maximilian I of Austria ruled Mexico under French support. French styles in art, design, and urban planning shaped cities like Mexico City, with notable landmarks such as the Castillo de Chapultepec. Likewise, Mexico’s rich cultural heritage, particularly in art, cuisine, and literature, has also influenced France. This exchange continues to enrich both cultures, fostering a unique and enduring connection. Mexico, France, and the U.S. have shared history through events like Cinco de Mayo. Celebrating the diverse connections between Mexico, France, and the U.S. fosters a deeper appreciation of each culture’s unique and interconnected contributions to the world.
No RSVPs needed, this is a free, family-friendly event.

Julio Ávalos, also known as Chous, and Ana Flores Lavin are graphic artists and designers who specialize in large-scale murals and public art as well as traditional and digital illustration. Based in Saltillo, Coahuila, they have worked on major projects and explored their passion for the arts in Mexico and around the world. A main focus of their work is to engage in the recovery of public spaces and crime prevention through art and cultural management. In addition to their urban art projects, they have worked on branding for companies and produced creative output for various cultural festivals.
J Muzacz is a public artist, community organizer, and educator with nearly two decades of experience creating landmark artworks. His innovative mosaics blend contemporary technology with the ancient process of mosaic-making. His artistic career has evolved naturally from traveling the world, collaboration with diverse communities, and a social practice involving education, having studied Sociology and been a teacher for over a decade. In 2018, Muzacz co-founded The Mosaic Workshop, where people of all ages and abilities can learn the art of mosaic making through hands-on workshops and ambitious community-led mosaic murals.
